      Metaxourgeio was named after the silk factories that were found in the area during the 1850s and it soon became an industrial district. In 2002 Metaxourgeio was included in the rehabilitation programme of the historical center of Athens and begun to bloom with refurbishments and renovations of abundant neoclassical buildings, art galleries and theatres. Today, Metaxourgeio has started to regain its prestige, becoming again one of Athens’ hot spots and popular nightlife districts.
